Belgian wind farm project Norther is pushing ahead. The selection of MVOW as the preferred supplier of V164-8 MW turbines marks an important milestone in the development of Norther. Norther with an awarded grid capacity of 370 MW is located in the Belgian North Sea, approximately 22 km off the coast of Zeebrugge and is able to produce energy clean energy to cover the consumption of 370,000 Belgian households.

Norther has appointed MHI Vestas Offshore Wind N.V. as its preferred supplier for the wind turbines and is now negotiating on an exclusive basis with MHI Vestas Offshore Wind. A final agreement is expected in the first half of 2016. The project is on schedule to reach financial close after summer of 2016 and to be operational from early 2019 onwards.

This strengthens the objective of the two shareholders, Elicio N.V. and Eneco Wind Belgium N.V., to maintain and further develop a strong presence in offshore wind.

As the largest offshore wind farm in Belgium as of 2019, Norther will contribute to Belgium’s and the European Union’s goal to reduce carbon dioxide emissions for the 2020 targets on climate change and energy. Belgium has committed to generating 13% of its energy needs from renewable sources by 2020.
